i wonder if any of the driving schools might be open to working with an experienced cyclist to create a course. when i took driving lessons i found the road with little cars on the table really helpful when the instructor would discuss certain situations.we would crouch down and look along the table at the level of the 'road' and simulate tricky manoeuvers. my instructor really forced the point that a right hand turn is trickier than a left, and that we MUST ALWAYS look over our right shoulder to check for cyclists. learning the law would also be beneficial for the cyclist. in the case off an accident, if an insurance claim is to be made by the cyclist, it would be best if the cyclist knew the laws, and was found not to be at fault. i know taking up space is important, but sometimes it's best to back off, and let the larger, more dangerous vehicle pass if you don't trust the driver, or are not sure if they can see you...knowing what to do when is key to staying alive. if one of my kids wanted to start cycling around town, i would want them to take a course first.
