Dalit usually refers to that portion of the population falling outside the pale of Indian caste society.

From what my prof. was saying this line is pretty much a summation of why dalits are who they are, since they are traditionally the darker members of the culture.

The idea of caste hierarchy rests largely on the concepts of purity and pollution. Brahmans were considered the "purist" human subjects, while untouchables and to some degree women, were considered the most degraded.
