As a (mostly) native of Northeast Ohio, I find a perverse pleasure in the lines that failed being CEI/Ohio Edison (two of WorstEnergy's regional umbrellas) being the cause. One of the things that I admire about Kucinich was that he fought Council to keep from selling off Muny Light (now Cleveland Public Power) so that they could make Cleveland Trust's (later Ameritrust, since absorbed by Society, now Key) interest payment demands.

Sure, defaulting on the loans was a black-eye for the city, and it led to Dennis's recall. But it preserved the only thing that has kept electric rates in Northeast Ohio reasonable, ensuring that the capitalists at WorstEnergy would have to compete. And CPP has been a wonderful asset for the city. I have forced my parents to grudgingly admit that saving CPP and defaulting on the loans was probably better for Cleveland in the long-run.

At least it was WorstEnergy's lines that failed. :) I would have hated to have seen it be CPP's.

Re: i swear that that coy smile of yours can't be wiped off your face today.

o i'm just waiting for someone to let us all know that kucinich's muny light caused the whole thing and let that be a lesson about tolerating pinko interference with the self-regulating godly natural core okayness of capitalism, kids.

health care coverage is getting some press lately, the crappy thing is how centered on the savings in health care costs the arguments end up being (i spose as opposed to raging on the indurance industry in general as an overgrown fearmongering opportunistic infection rife with corruption), because as with the cost of war, what they're calling the cost of health care is the lifeblood of the industry, maker of fortunes, and even keeps some folks employed. not that loggers shouldn't just fucking buck up and find a new profession, but lowering operating costs on a collective level will always sound the alarms in a capitalist corporatist all-is-commodity sort of country/world as this one. maybe though the lower infant mortality rate and longer life span canadians enjoy will help sell the idea, though we also live in the sort of society where the overall stats are considered skewed because with all this freedom & shit, there's disparity between the "regular people" and say, migrant workers, child thugs, chain gang crewmen, etc. and diversity is what makes america great, right? anyhoo.. the trip east was all kinds of not according to plan and the effects of that are still sort of shaking out. it's wierd, crosscurrents & complications, letdowns, faceups, etc.

Re: sucks to be us

also (this is a screened comment, unless you choose to reply here), i'm going to leave on AIM during this evening. if you happen to use that IM client and are cold chillin' in your crib on this Friday night, then you'll have the option of picking my widdle brain and shooting the shit that way.

[see the end of this comment for details]

of course, if you saw and heard just how pale i really am, then the cold chillin' comment would come out bizarrely laughable to anyone who soaks up the MTV vibe -- given my amalgamated soup of a twang that encompasses New York/Jersey (The Sopranos, Requiem for a Dream), Minnesota (Fargo), Toronto (Forever Knight, Great White North) and the Pacific Northwest (just pretend, okay?). pepper it with a little Urban Cowboy, and i easily scare people shitless whenever i don't just confuse them outright.

but i fail at not being "blonde" -- which is a euphemism in Minnesota for "privileged white people". there's wayyy too much variety in my ancestral soup to make some skeery-arse white supremacist think of me as something remotely like them (can we just say "gross" to that imagery of hoods, capes and dragons?).

ummm, hooookay. i don't even want to know where those two grafs came from. prolly my arse. oh, yeah: look for a screened post coming up momentarily.

you're so on a roll today. i think the placid waters of Champlain did you a world of good, lemme just say.
