The parade seemed shorter than usual, waiting for it was pure torture, and the weather made even running into old friends seem miserable.

The one high point was a moving and somber moment in the parade when a bunch of grotesques marched in procession carrying effigies to values lost. The entire crowd where I was sitting fell silent. It was the most sincere and intense reaction I’ve ever seen in a parade.

I stayed long enough for the parade, saw a little of the pageant, but I was so cold and wet after that, that I retreated indoors pretty quickly.
