welcome to the new custom friends list.

if you’re reading this, then you are now a part of the Midnight in Halifax custom list.

Midnight in Halifax is the underground retro dance collective I have curated (i guess that’s what you’d call it) since 1997, way back when it was nothing more than a late-night radio show on a paltry college FM station out on the edge of nowhere.

i’ve been remastering my vinyl and CD library of this extended dance stuff, all which i began collecting back in 1989. this remastering project began in 1999 and is actually on semi-hold right now, because i maxed out my 73 gigs of drive capacity, and i’ve been too poor lately to expand my capacity, cheap as drives as these days. these 73 gigs are where the masters of my remastered library reside.

the MIH collective is a newer venture. originally, i was working alone under the pretense of just being a DM, or “disc maven” — which is essentially a DJ, but i’ve never been thrilled with calling myself a “disc jockey”.

i mean, i’m not exactly riding anything, am i?

anyway, over the last couple of years, i’ve come to recognise just how inefficient it is to work alone on a project of this magnitude — that it’s far better to put talented, dedicated minds together, all working towards a common destination.

after all, this is an archival and exhibition project. since the major record labels have released so little of this stuff in the digital world, it’s effectively become a preservation effort.

now that i’m in Seattle, i’m looking forward to create a dedicated base of MIH listeners the way i had back in Minneapolis.

actually, it was very much a cult following kind of thing there, what with the same group of regulars appearing at many of the venue appearances at Sursumcorda and the Chatterbox Pub, while other patrons seemed to appreciate the effort as some kind of nostalgic novelty, throwing tip money at me as i played their requests.

but the best, i’m hoping, is yet to happen.

when sparkle_vixen and i settle in the city later this year, i’m going to finally budget for a broadband line.

for several years, i’ve envisioned a Midnight in Halifax radio station, playing extended versions of all the contents that remain locked away in my library.

as it is, the library playlist takes about seven days to run its course without repetition. this bodes well for anyone worried about hearing the same version of a song more than once within the span of a day or two.

so.

i encourage you to jump into the mix here if you have something to suggest, to contribute or otherwise. if you have any ideas or leads that may be worth pursuing, let me know. i’m actually pretty receptive about the MIH stuff these days.
