Request call for known Kodachrome collections

Astrid Idlewild
Saturday, 22 January 2011 Field work

The core of my research at this stage is to assemble a known list of collections — both public and private — with confirmed Kodachrome media and a general description of its contents (and formats).

At this time, I am focussing on early collections, sets, or examples from the early Kodachrome years — between 1935 and 1955 for movie-cine film (8mm, 16mm), and between 1936 and 1945 for any still film (35mm, 828, sheet film). [NOTE: If you have samples from the years just after those listed above — up to 1965 in cine movie or 1955 in still film — I am also interested to speak with you! I will be in touch once I have this first group collected and indexed.]

Get in touch with me through this blog if you think you have a possible lead. Thank you!

The ultimate goal for this stage of the Kodachrome Toronto project is to generate a index (with archival metadata) of known collections for future researchers, archivists, and curators to use as a reference for future consultation. At this stage, there is no call for content submission. It would, however, be my humblest privilege if invited to review anything from a personal or institutional collection. In so doing, your help will unquestionably improve the quality of the collection’s description for this Kodachrome Toronto index.

The index will be reproduced for my masters thesis project to be submitted to my research supervisor, Nik Luka, later this year. Beyond name and general location of the collection presently, no personal information (i.e., phone numbers, addresses, email, etc.) will be published in the thesis project unless and only the owner or custodian of a collection explicitly gives their consent to do so. Contact information will be retained by me, the researcher, for sake of being able to contact parties for this indexing effort. They otherwise will not be shared.

Are you seeking Toronto-specific Kodachromes, or just general ones? I posted a good number of 1940s-1960s images here:

and there are more that I haven’t yet digitized. These are primarily from Buffalo and Chautauqua, NY, along with Allegany State Park and Sheffield, PA. The square format ones are Ektachromes from the 1960s, many in Port Colborne, ON.

Generally, yes. The primary scope is the city of Toronto’s geography as it is today. But I’m also interested to see other GTA shots and, in special cases, Greater Golden Horseshoe Area (GGHA) Kodachrome photos — particularly as they apply to the GGHA’s historical economies (example: scenes of active steel foundries in Hamilton ca., 1940s or 1950s).

Thanks for this link! I’m looking through some of them now. The red car immediately caught my eye. where was that specifically?
