a-ha galore.

chaizzilla gets the super thumbs-up today.

she made a CD-R full of MP3 content that i previously couldn’t hear online, since i don’t have broadband. lots of 1990s-era a-ha that i’ve either not heard in awhile or else is completely new to me.

the only trouble has to do with the filenames. i’ve just heard a gem of two new-to-me songs by presumably a-ha called “01_MINOR.MP3″ and “02_LITTLE.MP3″ from the LP “MINOR_EA”, and i have no idea what their full titles are without digging around on gemm.com or pulling up Amazon.

i’m feeling chill, tired and lazy on this non-eventful, alone day in the netherverse. and sparkle_vixen went out with her ex-Tracy for the day.

i underslept. why?

after coming home at two a.m. from seeing The Two Towers at Majestic Bay Cinema in Woebegon Bay Shore (or, ummm, Ballard), i was up until nearly five applying with a big regional company for a graphic artist opening for which i’m completely matched.

this would have been done before i left to go out yesterday afternoon when i was ready to send the stuff their way, but the company in question employs the ever-arduous, long and protracted Monster.com application engine. ew. scrick.

Monster.com should, like, go boom or something.

so, i’m just gonna sit here, listen to the new MP3 stuff and give it a whirl. maybe i’ll even catch a nap. we’ll see.

chaizzilla, i’m buying you lunch for making me this CD-R. just as soon as i get unpoor enough to afford doing so.

we just moved to Fremont this month (we’re still moving. gah.), and I saw my first movie at the Majestic Bay (The Two Towers, actually) last weekend. And I have to say, I loved it. It’s got that really good seating, where every seat has a good view. I really dig it, plus it’s in a neat area.

  it doesn’t suck, but i’m really wanted to see what the Cinerama screen looks like. i’ve wanted to see a Cinerama screen since i was a kid.

I’ve only heard one song by A-HA (Crying in the rain), and I love it. Which other ones would you recommend? I’ve got lots of download time and nothing to download.

  it depends upon your choice for year and style (since a lot of their content came from the 1980s), but here’s a primer:
  1985:
  “Take On Me”, “The Sun Always Shines On TV” and “Hunting High and Low” were all singles from their debut LP, also called Hunting High and Low. i’m certain you’ll have heard of Take On Me several times without previously realising it. they’re all brilliant.
  1986: “Cry Wolf” was a single. it was okay, but not earth-shattering. however, some of the non-single songs from that year’s LP, Scoundrel Days, are simply beautiful and brilliant. “Maybe, Maybe”, “We’re Looking for the Whales”, “Manhattan Skyline” and “The Weight of the Wind” are good in their own ways. the first three in that list of four, though, are by far the ones i play over and over.
  1988: this is during the Stay On These Roads album period. the only songs that i really ever warmed up to were “The Blood That Moves The Body” and “Touchy!”, both which were also singles.
  1991: “Crying in the Rain” came from this era, which was, i believe, the LP called East of the Sun, West of the Moon. i’m least familiar with this release, since it never came out in the U.S. back then. at least, that’s how i remember it. or else maybe the singles weren’t released. i can’t recall.
  1993: Memorial Beach was released this year. i remember hearing it once when it came out then, and i recall it sounding a slight-bit more British rock-bluesy, a la Chris Rea and Paul Brady (who, incidentally, isn’t English. he’s Irish, but anyway). it’s okay if you look at it from the whole LP’s perspective, but i’ve not had the chance to really explore it. ‘s CD-R full of a-ha MP3s she just made me includes this album, so i’ll be listening to it more soon.
  2000 & 2002: both of these LPs are new to me, and i’ve been listening to both intently these last two days. both of them, 2000′s Minor Earth / Major Sky and 2002′s Lifelines are completely impressing me. on the 2000 LP, “Minor Earth / Major Sky”, “Little Black Heart”, “Barely Hanging On” and “The Sun Never Shone That Day” are what have me completely engrossed. on the 2002 LP, “You Wanted More”, “Forever Not Yours”, “There’s a Reason For It” (i *really* like this one in kind of a post-modern 1989-1990 way) and “Oranges on Apple Trees” (though the recording i have is really, ummm, strangely mastered, like *way* too much bass by the person who made the MP3 of it).
  so, there you sort of have it. you have plenty to start with here.

  Thanks a bunch. I *have* heard Take on me a million times, and I *did* know it was by a-ha… didn’t remember it then.
  I downloaded the sun always shines on tv, and I like it. It’s a lot harder to find the sun never shone that day… that’s the one I was after.

  “The Sun Never Shone That Day” is a much newer song that, unlike the international success of 1985′s “The Sun Always Shine On TV”, wasn’t even released as a single. this probably explains why you’re having some trouble.
  supposedly, they’re companion pieces to each other. at least, that’s what i’ve been told.
  just keep looking. i’m sure it’ll show up somewhere eventually.
