i summoned a little bit of mental fortitude to answer these, blakeh.

hopefully, i won’t too terribly disappoint.

1. Best DJ remix service (Razormaid, Hot Tracks, Rhythm Stick, etc.) and why.

holy wars are made of questions like this.

i never knew Rhythm Stick. rather, i’ve known Razormaid, Hot Tracks, Disconet, Art of Mix, Telegenics, Rockamerica (the latter two not being remix services, per se, but they have a highly esteemed value all their own) and a couple of others.

i’m loath to say the obvious, because that’s the easy way out. and some of the mixes did grow tedious. but compared to others, i think Razormaid frequently did better at reconfiguring the very structure of the song, since they often had special access to multitrack masters and so on. Hot Tracks generally didn’t.

in its day, that might have been fine for Hot Tracks, but i can create that kind of stuff now (and have, actually). what i admired about Art Maharg and Joseph Watt’s approach was that they found ways to extend and remix the content without bastardising the integrity of the original artists’ intent — something which completely got obliterated in the 1990s in general.

so, like, i will probably burn in hell for this — considering that most Razormaid content i can listen to these days is of grey-sourced nature (cos i wasn’t privileged enough or old enough to be a DJ then (translated: sixteen year-old queer girl, where all the DJs were often gay men nearing 30), and i’m too poor to own fruity-coloured vinyl or double-discs pressed in 1989, whee) — but all things considered (and despite how much i loved Art of Mix, Volume 3, owning it for about six years myself), i’d have to say that on the whole, Razormaid’s choice of content they remixed and overall quality they demonstrated through the 1980s and early 1990s was a level above their competitors.

2. Your opinion on lying to someone you love… Is it OK if it spares their feelings or should a policy of absolute, 100% honesty be in effect at all times?

i’m an Aries, so like, guess.

100 percent honesty. always. you see why i’m hated by the millions now? i constantly say the unpopular things. sometimes i’ll give pause before i say it, but i don’t feel so keen with lying or obfuscation.

and i’m a bad liar, so why bother trying?

3. List your top 5 favorite modern artists (non-musical, e.g. Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Pollock, etc.).

i can’t really pick any. i don’t pay attention to modern art — not in earnest, at least. i just don’t have access. i’ve never been educated on art history. i also don’t exactly know what the “modern movement” was, how one was defined as a modern artist or when that period took place. i know the name Pollock only because there was a film made about him, one which i didn’t see. i’ve never heard of Cindy Sherman and i never really dug Andy Warhol.

ratchet me down about fifteen rungs now. aren’t you truly ashamed you know me now? i feel like Max to you, Logan.

4. Best part of Frankie Goes To Hollywood: Holly Johnson or the Lads?

Holly Johnson was overrated. i’ve never been too enamoured by his non-FGTH work. and the Lads had a joie d’vivre that made FGTH every bit about decadence, debauchery, sin and thumbing one’s nose to it all. they were a rowdy bunch, while Holly was always preening for the camera and the microphone. separated, Holly and the Lads weren’t very effective. they were much better as a cohesive unit, working closely alongside Horn, Lipson and Jeczalik.

5. Detail all you know about the concept of quantum physics.

not terribly much. i can throw out words here and there and more or less bullshit at trying to make sense of it all, and if you know a thing or two about it, then you’ll see just how riddled with holes my knowledge on the matter (pun not intended) really is.

ummm, we’re talking subatomic here — the physics which make neutrons, protons and electrons possible, to say nothing about certain strong, weak, magnetic and gravitational forces, not all of it really being fully understood. the subatomic particles known or presumed to exist are but a handful, and of those, none have actually been seen. the only way particle physicists know they exist is through indirect recording of their trails as a result of smashing atoms (like gold) in a particle accelerator. oh, and in mathematical equation hell, which i’m sure is rather blissful and like nirvana to a particle physicist.

anyhow, i can’t remember all the particle names or their functions. i think some include quarks, gluons, photons and others. if i recall, such particles can have multiple “states”, “charges” or whatever simultaneously, which is why people are all looking into quantum computing with fervor.

and that’s about all i know.
