inner circle people-plus: i won’t be making an open announcement about this until monday.

but i’ve finished the bulk of the work associated with my business web site.

before i go any further, i’ve learned some not-too-wonderful things about the results:

1. i’m no longer fluently versed in writing cross-platform-compatible web sites. it’s difficult to say that i ever was.

2. this site crashed my Netscape Communicator 4.79 browser, which means i have no idea if it’ll crash anyone’s browser outside of using Internet Explorer.

3. there’s no guarantee or even encouragement that having a testament to my creative style and portfolio at people’s disposal is going to encourage my ability to drum up new work, new jobs, new contracts or whatever.

4. it seems like the last three web sites i built have occurred all under severe emotional and economic duress. it’s the first one since 2001, and it’s the first one that had to use a lot of Javascript and DHTML stuff, neither which i really know, since, ummm, i’m not a programmer.

anyhow, the web site. for those of you that didn’t already know my real name before, just know that that real name never gets used in LiveJournal world.

what you’re hearing, more than anything else, is exacerbation and resignation from being so underemployed for, well, so long, that even the small accomplishments don’t really feel like anything more than standing in the place where you live.
in other words, i can’t really know whether my work or element of creativity is of professional calibre anymore. the longer you’re away from the environment — with the other copywriters, art directors, production geniuses, project managers, creative directors and those pesky account people — the more one begins to question themselves as to their professional adroitness.
on the bright side, the web site does work on the latest edition of Netscape Navigator, something which i didn’t know until about two hours ago, when i went and downloaded the nearly 20MB beast on a 56K line, whee.
now, it’s time to go and find some work. and finish the other segment of the web site, which hasn’t even begun just yet. should you examine the site again, i am liable to hold you to a higher standard for critical feedback, since, well, you’re in the industry.
not to put that added weight on your shoulders. *grin*

I’m more than happy to give you a critique once I get a faster connection to dig through your site. It’s a painfully slow grind on dial-up and due to being overly busy at work I typically have the patience and attention span of a gnat once I get home.
But just based on the little I looked at, you really have nothing to be worried about. Your work is more competent than many of my co-workers. :)

i was afraid of that.
i’d tried to both optimise and keep the number of image hits per page pretty low, even though i fully well know that the bulk of my potential clients are going to have high-speed access already. plus, when presenting an online visual portfolio, it’s excessively hard to to keep load times as fast as, say, reading Salon.com or even an eBay bid page (which has admittedly gotten slower in more recent years).
thanks for the kind word, . who knows? maybe i can replace one or two of your cow-orkers down the way.
if anything, i appreciate you putting up with my bum-note drivel as of late. being underemployed for this long does register a toll, especially on the creative mind.
