Okay, maatnofret and typenik. The ball was in my court. Now it’s in yours.
Your feedback on the cover letter theme proved very helpful. :)
So. This is the longer version of the new cover letter theme. The short version removes the third and fourth grafs relating to Company A & B. Either version will be considered, depending on the nature of the opening and how much information the employer is soliciting for first contact. The opening and closing grafs will, of course, change slightly with each company I apply. The two main considerations, suggested by you both (simplifying sentence structure and making my tone more approachable), are applied here.
Your mission, if you choose to do it again, is to give this one a look-through and supply me with your input. :)
Dear [Hiring Manager],
Thank you for giving me a chance to say hello. I have seen your copywriter job posting on [placed where posted here], and I eagerly wish to apply. In so doing, I invite you to take a moment to review my resumé. It will yield a concise, comprehensive summary of my background, and it should also serve as a great way to launch our interview.
My copywriting experience reaches back to 1998, and it has emerged as the primary focus of my career. While contracting as a graphic designer and Web producer, I discovered that my talent for writing clear and understandable content was remarkably adept. When my recruiter at [a well-known contractor] in 1999 read a proposal that I recently had prepared, he noted, “You write more effectively than most of the copywriters we send out to assignments.” And so it began. Ever since, I have learned how to better refine the voice I employ for campaigns, uncovering the ideas that appeal to the customer.
Take, for instance, these highlights at both [Company A] and [Company B]. At [Company A], this meant finding a clearer way to convey to oncologists and researchers how pivotal the role [Company A's product] — [Company A]‘s cancer registry research tool — plays in their effort to find a cure. I succeeded by rewriting the marketing literature, preparing a design study, and demonstrating these enhancements to senior staff. My findings triggered a strategic rethinking for how the company promoted [Company A's product] to this highly specialized audience.
With [Company B], the challenge was elemental: introduce and foster a compelling brand for a new furniture distributor with no name recognition. I worked closely with the marketing director and president to devise from scratch a complete turnkey branding program. Also, I considered the sensibilities of those customers which [Company B] had targeted, giving birth to the company’s essence in the copy I wrote. In 18 months, [Company B] went from a name with little more than inventory to a major player in outdoor wood furniture merchandising and distribution. My direct hand in this helped [Company B] close deals with major retailers, such as Target Corporation’s upscale mark, Marshall Fields.
My wisdom, candor, experience, and determination should be what sways you to invite me for an interview. It will give us an opportunity to learn whether our personalities and professional aspirations are compatible and refreshingly complementary to one another. I sincerely want to explore this avenue and find out. How about you?
Regards,
